Cats are very independent animals. They do not require as much attention as some other animals, but taking care of a cat does require some work. Cats depend on you for food, water, companionship, shelter and much more. We have developed a Top Ten List of cat care. Follow the list for a happy healthy relationship for many years.

Make sure your cat has a Collar and ID Tag with your contact information. No matter how careful you are, your cat can always slip away. If a cat has a collar, most people assume it has an owner, and an ID Tag assures that they can contact you.
Keep your cat inside. It's a rough world out there! Keeping your cat indoor keeps your cat safer, is better for you and your neighbors as well.
Follow your Local Laws. Follow all registration and licensing laws in your area, and keep all your paperwork up to date.
Spay or Neuter Your Cat. There are millions of unwanted animals in shelters. Help control the pet population.
Visit the Vet Regularly. Cats can get sick too. Get regular checkups for your cat and your yearly vaccinations.
Train Your Cat. Most people think cats cannot be trained. Teaching them not to jump on countertops or scratching your furniture is actually very simple with a little patience and understanding.
Feed your cat a healthy diet. Make sure to feed your cat a nutritionally balanced diet, and provide access to fresh clean water daily.

In case of an emergency, it is important to remain calm and quickly get your pet to a veterinarian. If it is after hours you will need to call your local emergency pet clinic. It is a good idea to have those numbers somewhere handy by the telephone.

You should never attempt CPR on your cat unless you are sure that you can administer it correctly. There are however some things you can do to help your cat before you get to your veterinarian or emergency pet clinic.

Wrap your cat in a towel or blanket to keep them warm and to restrict movement.
Apply a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding of a cut or bite.
Don't induce vomiting even if you think your cat may have ingested a poisonous substance.
If your cat is suffering from heatstroke, you can sponge them with cool water and encourage drinking.

Everyone who owns a cat should have a basic feline first aid kit. A few items to include are:

Sterile gauze pads, rolled sterile gauze, white surgical tape, cotton balls.
Small scissors and tweezers
Hydrogen Peroxide
Antiseptic cleaner, such as Bactine
Emergency Phone Numbers
Rectal thermometer
