Cat First Aid Tips

In case of an emergency, it is important to remain calm and quickly get your pet to a veterinarian. If it is after hours you will need to call your local emergency pet clinic. It is a good idea to have those numbers somewhere handy by the telephone.

You should never attempt CPR on your cat unless you are sure that you can administer it correctly. There are however some things you can do to help your cat before you get to your veterinarian or emergency pet clinic.

  • Wrap your cat in a towel or blanket to keep them warm and to restrict movement.
  • Apply a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding of a cut or bite.
  • Don't induce vomiting even if you think your cat may have ingested a poisonous substance.
  • If your cat is suffering from heatstroke, you can sponge them with cool water and encourage drinking.

Everyone who owns a cat should have a basic feline first aid kit. A few items to include are:

  • Sterile gauze pads, rolled sterile gauze, white surgical tape, cotton balls.
  • Small scissors and tweezers
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Antiseptic cleaner, such as Bactine
  • Emergency Phone Numbers
  • Rectal thermometer

Alternatively you may choose to buy a pet first aid kit.
